Petra Castle is a historical fortress-city in
west Georgia, in the Kobuleti district. It was constructed in the VI century
AD. Due to its unique military-strategic and trade-economic location the
Byzantine Emperor Justinian built a city here. The most important land road was
crossing the city connecting the western provinces of the Byzantine Empire to
Iran and Armenia.A museum is operating in Petra Castle where archaeological
discoveries and material found during excavations are kept and protected. It is
situated within 440 m above sea level. Nowadays there are only ruins. "Petra" in the
name of a Byzantine fortress, and "Monster
Castle" - Georgian. It is believed that this castle is the same
castle which was referred to
the ,,Vefkhistkaosani”. Petra’s Acropolis is located on the coastal rocky hill, on the land side of the fence beside
the rocky terrain of defending it (hence its Greek name, "Petra" - stone, rock). Petra Citadel was considered inaccessible.Its ruins are still preserved. Archaeological complex includes a citadel.
